White House officials plan to launch a website that would allow Americans to buy cheaper prescription drugs directly from pharmaceutical companies, according to a Bloomberg report. And incredibly, officials are seriously considering to slap the name of President Donald Trump on the project.

The potential website would allow consumers to search for various drugs and to be “connected to platforms that sell them”, although it is not clear how it would save money to patients. A floating name is, as you could expect Trumprx.

Bloomberg underlines that the plans for the website have not been finalized and that “discussions are underway”, but the report is certainly in accordance with everything we know about President Trump. He likes to slap his name on things, and he likes to attribute to merit when he can. It is the guy who personally took advantage of the presidency, the richness of his family increasing by billions of dollars thanks to investments in cryptography, according to the Wall Street Journal.

While all Americans would welcome a drop in drug prices, Trump’s efforts in this area seem to be more desperate than practical. One of the main reasons why Americans pay more than any other country for drugs is that politicians in the 2000s have made it illegal to negotiate for better prices. It was illegal for medication to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies on most drugs, although this changed slightly in 2022 with the law on the reduction of inflation. Now, 10 new drugs each year can be negotiated, which pharmaceutical companies have fought teeth and nails in court.

In May, President Trump ordered pharmaceutical companies to reduce their prices in a decision that was confused among pharmaceutical leaders, according to Stat. Rather than adopting legislation, Trump thinks that he can ensure that pharmaceutical companies make things cheaper simply by demanding that they give consumers the lowest price set in the world.

In July, Trump sent 17 large drugs demanding the most favored prices, although it is not clear why they would simply do it because he told them. The decrees are not the same as the legislation. Trump gave a deadline of September 29 to comply with companies. And although it seems to be a sure bet that business leaders would like to make Trump happy in order to avoid his anger, these people want to continue to make the enormous benefits that have motivated their business.

On the other hand, the American CEOs were more than ready to play ball with Trump as a new era emerges. The leaders of technology know that they can go to kiss the ring in the White House, and that makes a big difference when the time of our great fascist president comes to release the new prices of this month. The government has even recently taken a 10% stake in Intel, which would have been considered beyond the pale in a previous administration.

All we know with certainty is that it will continue to become more authoritarian and bizarre. And Trumprx is not even the strangest idea that we heard this week.
