Who is Tyler Robinson, the suspect in detention for shooting Charlie Kirk?

The man accused of shooting the conservative activist Charlie Kirk was identified as Tyler Robinson, 22, from Utah who had lived with his parents “for a long time,” the authorities said.

Mr. Robinson was placed in police custody on September 12 after a family member recognized him in surveillance images, development investigators described as pivots to end a human hunting at the national level.

This family member was apparently the father of Mr. Robinson, who encouraged him to surrender, reported the American BBC partner, CBS News, citing two sources of application of the law. The father would then have contacted a family friend who contacted the sheriff’s office.

On Friday, during a press briefing announcing the arrest, FBI officials refused to discuss the history, political trends or possible motivations of Mr. Robinson, saying that the investigation was underway.

“We are convinced that we have the right individual in detention,” said a spokesperson for the FBI, “but we are still working to establish a complete image of whom he is and why he acted.”

UTAH governor Spencer Cox said that the investigative family said Robinson has become “more political” in recent years.

The parent also said that during a conversation for dinner before the attack, Robinson said Kirk “was full of hatred and dissemination of hatred” and mentioned the next Kirk event at Utah Valley University, according to Cox.

“They explained why they didn’t like him and the views he had,” said Cox referring to the conversation.

The public files examined by the BBC suggest that Mr. Robinson had in the past recorded as an unconvilled or non -partisan voter in UTAH. Matthew Carl Robinson, the suspect’s father, and Amber Denise Robinson, the mother of the suspect, are registered Republicans, according to the state archives.

Mr. Robinson was not registered in UVU, the site of the shooting.

The files examined by BBC Verify suggest that he attended Utah State University in Logan for a single semester in 2021, possibly studying engineering. This year’s photograph shows it in front of the university sign which holds a letter of acceptance.

Investigators say that Mr. Robinson was imbued with online culture, pointing inscriptions on the shell envelopes related to the case.

Two sockets have shown visible references to online laggle fishing humor. The inscription “Note of Owo bulges What is it?” On a pulled shell case can refer to a “copypasta” – a text that is repeated over and over again, often to troll people online. Another case, which was not hidden, was written with the words “If you read this, you are gay lmao” – again an apparent reference to a joke.

Meanwhile, other envelopes could be interpreted as sympathetic in Antifa, or in the anti-fascist movement, a loose collection of distant activists who have been active in the United States over the past decade and often demonstrate against Trump policies and far-right groups.

An unnecessary case had the words “hey fascist! Catch!” And an arrow up, right and three below.

The three arrows down alone could be a common symbol used for anti-fascism. Overall, the arrow sequence could refer to a cheat code in a video game – although it remains clear, and the authorities have not yet published images of the boxes.

A second case was written with the lyrics of the song “Bella Ciao” which honors the supporters of the Second World War of the Italian Resistance who fought Nazi Germany.

Authorities said Robinson also seemed to have been active on Discord, the social media platform mainly used by players, but now also popular with other communities.

His roommate would have shown the investigators a series of messages on the discord of a contact called “Tyler” referring to a “Drop Point” rifle and instructions on recovery and hiding place.

For the moment, Mr. Robinson remains in detention while the prosecutors are preparing official accusations.

The investigation into his history, his motivations and his potential affiliations is continuing in what officials call one of the most important political murders in recent history in the United States.
