“ Witchboard ‘invokes a fun but unequal remake of a classic cult

Released in 1986, the original WitchThe cultural impact is mainly linger because it features Tawny Kitaen – better known to be a musical -video rebirth than an actor. But the casting casting works: the curiosity of the board of directors of his character becomes tragic when a bad mind takes a shine, perhaps attracted by his perfectly tanned hair. The film offers more cheese than fear, but you can easily see why it has become a classic cult.
Less clear is why Witch Need a remake, in particular the one who only raises the very slightly original equipment, but you cannot neglect this catchy title. This new version, which comes from the favorite of the genus Chuck Russell (Director of the Freddy Favorite suite for fans A nightmare on ELM Street 3: Dream Warriorsas well as The mask And King Scorpion), hinders many more diapers in its history, something that ends up countering it. But he also triggers very fun and surprisingly macabre fulfillments that help compensate for his shortcomings.

Whenever a horror film begins with a wild historical flashback, you can be sure that it will have an impact on everything that is happening today. Especially if the film is called WitchAnd the flashback implies a witch confrontation against Hunter and presents a very distinctive spiritual board capable of invoking black magic. In addition, if one of the characters in the main story makes a deactivated remark on being an orphan, knowing nothing about his real family, etc., you can start immediate speculation about the character of the 17th century that is linked to him.
Most Witch Takes up in New Orleans, a city that lends itself to strange misdeeds as well as the cultivation of restaurants. This intersection is the place where we find Emily (Annabelle returns homeIs Madison Iseman) applauding his fiancé Christian (Aaron Dominguez) while he and his friends are preparing to open a new coffee. Emily finally feels optimistic about the future after a transition to a detoxification treatment, and she is so confident in her relationship that she only removes a little than the Exp Glamor of Christian, Brooke (Melanie Jarnson), presents himself at the launch party.
And in fact, Brooke – which is conveniently expert in “shamanic traditions” – immediately proves once Emily shows her the spiritual board (very distinctive) that she found while bringing together mushrooms for the restaurant. We know, of course, that the board of directors has recently been stolen in a local museum at the request of the disaster Dr Alexander Babtiste (Foreign things“Jamie Campbell Bower). But women do not do it, and in case a horror fan who has settled to look Witch Do not know how a spiritual board works, Brooke is there with a quick overview.

With the context and exposure away, Witch Can dive into goopy stuff that ends up justifying its existence. Once Emily begins to experience with the board, bad things happen, starting with a fantastically dark kitchen scene that evokes the same tension Final destination The films exploit during the configuration of their elaborate deadly sets.
A sequence of subsequent restaurants is such an exaggerated crier that you want Witch had completely looked into this scandalous tone. It certainly seems to be arranged; Some of his best moments come to a charismatic wandering cat that begins to follow Emily. And Bower’s performance is so Campy that it annoys being a villain. This is a guy who lives in a mansion filled with antiques where he is assisted by stylized triplet witches like Daenerys Targaryen and Lance Eyes widened-Style Solstice Parties. There are friends with Brooke, so he made his way to “help” an Emily and Christian increasingly panicked with his witch expertise and an ultippe motif which is clear to the culmination of the film.
Only, his plan does not make much sense. We will not spoil the finest points here – not that we could explain them if we wanted – but that is linked to this shock of the 17th century and, just like the original Witchthreatens the soul of his first supernaturally curious woman. Witch Also presents a confusing approach to the Wicca, traces a cautious line between “I use healing herbs” and “I love Satan”, then completely muddy.
But maybe it thinks you. It is Witchafter all. Although the remake does not drop the original of its place in the pantheon of the cult film, at least, it keeps things horribly entertaining along the way.
Witch arrived in theaters on August 15. If you need a little more flesh with your efforts, the 1986 Witch is also streaming on Amazon Prime.
