President Donald Trump said on Saturday that his summit with Russian president Vladimir Putin “went very well” after the couple met for hours a day before.

The two leaders did not conclude a cease-fire agreement following talks, which Trump had repeatedly stressed in the complexity of their meeting.

Instead, Trump wrote on social networks: “It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrible war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a peace agreement, which would end the war, and not a simple cease-fire agreement, which would not often keep.”

Trump’s comments disagreed him with officials in Ukraine and European leaders who are urgently looking for a lasting ceasefire in the current war.

A joint statement by European leaders said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was not invited to the summit, should be present at all future talks and that it will be up to Ukraine to make decisions on its territory “.

The allies of Ukraine in Europe also expressed their concern that Trump was approaching Putin’s position after his meeting. The absence of an immediate ceasefire allows Russia to continue its fights in Ukraine without threat of punishment from the United States or its allies.

“As long as the murder in Ukraine continues, we are ready to maintain pressure on Russia,” said European leaders. “We will continue to strengthen sanctions and wider economic measures to put pressure on the war economy of Russia until there is just and lasting peace.”

Zelenskyy said he was planning to meet Trump to “discuss all () details concerning the end of killings and war”, according to an article on Telegram.

Trump, who said he spoke with Zelenskyy and other European leaders overnight, is about to meet the Ukrainian bureau chief on Monday afternoon, he said in a social article of truth.

“If everything works, then we will plan a meeting with President Putin,” said Trump.

The deputy chief of staff of the White House, Stephen Miller, said on Saturday on Fox News that during the meeting of the president with Zelenskyy, Trump was going to find “this path for a complete peace agreement, working with our European partners in the hope that we can forge peace”.

Putin said in a statement on Saturday that his meeting with Trump was “very frank, significant and, in my opinion, that brings us closer to the necessary decisions”.

Despite the absence of a resolution, Russian officials reported the victory after the talks.

“A new European and international security architecture is on the agenda and everyone must accept it,” said Andrei Klishas, Russian senator, according to the Washington Post.
