9 Tips and Tricks to Get the Most Out of Your Amazon Kindle


If you have it yourself with a Kindle e-book reader—perhaps a new version if Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition or Kindle Colorsoft-then you will know that these tools are very simple in terms of their features and controls. The focus is on the text and everything you are reading.

Behind the simple and friendly interface, the Kindle has more information and intelligence than you might expect. Of course, these e-readers don’t compete with iPads for functionality, but there’s a lot you can do with them – from editing what you’re reading to finding things other than ebooks on the screen.

1. Look at the Word

Don’t get carried away by unfamiliar words you come across while reading. You can find the meaning of anything that appears on the screen by simply pressing and holding the word. When the definition is displayed, you can swipe left to see if there is a Wikipedia word, and swipe left to translate the word into another language.

2. Send Online Text to Your Kindle

You can also use your Kindle to read online, by sending online content to the device. Perhaps the easiest way is that Kindle accessories for Google Chrome – as long as you want to send text from a desktop browser. Once you’re signed in to your Amazon account, transferring content is just a few clicks away.

The Kindle extension is fast and free, but it doesn’t get the page layout right, and it doesn’t work on mobile. Instapaper it does a better job with its own Kindle-sync function, but you need a $6-a-month plan to get it. Push to Kindle is also good, but the $3-a-month subscription requires sending more than 10 articles per month.

3. Take a Screenshot

You can take photos on your Kindle, if you want to show off your library or share a passage from a social media book, for example. Just click on the two viewing angles, in the right corner. The screen will flash, and the screengrab will be saved. Connect your Kindle to your computer with a USB cable, and you’ll find all your photos saved in their own dedicated folder.

4. Turn Your Books into Books

As you add ebooks (and e-books) to your library, it can start to get overwhelming – and organizing them to find what you’re reading becomes even more difficult. You can reduce this to some extent by creating collections. These are folders for selecting titles, whether by genre, author, or whether you want to read them soon.

To get started, from the Kindle home page click the three dots on the top right, then Create a Collection. Give your collection a name, and mark it as a favorite if you like (which makes it more visible on different screens). You can then choose to sort the Library page by collection – just click on the selection icon, the three horizontal lines on the top right.
