Erling Haaland could do well after signing a new contract at Manchester City, manager Pep Guardiola has said.

Haaland has won the Premier League’s golden boot in both of his seasons with City so far and signed a contract to stay at the club until 2034 on Friday morning.

Haaland will turn 34 this summer and will be confident of chasing Alan Shearer’s record of 260 Premier League goals if he achieves it.

Guardiola said “If he continues with the numbers since he arrived, then yes (it’s possible). It depends on the team and him, but it’s special news for the club.

“He loves the club and the people around him. He loves the Premier League and he lives here with his family. He has to see that there is no better place to be in the next 10 years.

“It is true that he can change. We all can. The club and the team must create a place and time that they cannot stop. This is where he is at his best.

“More than anything else is understanding the game, the timing of the game and what they have to do.

“He is still young and in the development of games and games it will happen naturally.”

City have had a disappointing season by their own standards and enter this weekend in sixth place in the Premier League.

Haaland has scored 21 goals in all competitions but has just seven in his last 16 games – a slow pace with his tally.

Shearer himself believes it is only a matter of time before Haaland – who has 79 Premier League goals to date – catches up.

“If he stays longer he will undoubtedly break that record,” said Shearer. “It could be someone else then – like Harry Kane or Mo Salah.

“But there’s no question whether, and big if, for such a long contract and taking him to 34, he deserves to have the Premier League record for goal-wise.

“It’s good news for the Premier League because we want the best players in our league, not the best for a full-back who will be chasing his tail for years to come.”
