Nigeria stunned New Zealand to make history

Nigeria, on Monday (January 20), created history when they stunned New Zealand to register victory in their first match of the ICC Women’s U19 World Cup.

Nigeria competed in the ongoing edition. Their first game was against Samoa on Saturday and while they would have liked to start their campaign with a win, the clash was abandoned due to rain.

However, the washout did not deter them as they came up with a superb display to register a historic win for New Zealand. The wet weather also threatened to spoil the game but Nigeria had enough time to claim victory after it was confirmed that there would be play even though the game was reduced to a 13-over-a-side contest.

For New Zealand, Anika Tauwhare was the pick of the bowlers, taking one wicket for just 6 runs in 3 overs. After the bowlers managed to restrict Nigeria to a minimum, the onus was on the New Zealand batsmen to keep their team going.

However, the batsmen failed to capitalize on the performance of the fielders as New Zealand lost by two runs. They finished their innings at 63/6. New Zealand lost both their openers within three overs before Eve Wolland (14) and Anika Todd (19) steadied the train. Captain Tash Wakelin also played an 18-run knock.
