TikTok has gone offline in the US, just hours before a new law banning the platform goes into effect.
A message available on the app for US users says that a TikTok ban has been implemented, meaning that “you can’t use TikTok at this time”.
“We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to TikTok as soon as he takes office,” it said.
It comes after the TV platform warned that it would “go black” on Sunday unless the outgoing Biden administration confirmed that the ban would not be implemented.
President-elect Donald Trump has said it is “possible” to give TikTok a 90-day reprieve when the ban takes effect on Monday.
Users reported that the app was also removed from the US Apple and Google stores and TikTok.com did not show videos.
“A 90-day extension is something that can be done, because it’s appropriate,” Trump told NBC News on Saturday.
“If I decide to do it, I’ll probably announce it on Monday.”
The White House said it was up to the incoming administration to act.
“We see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take action in the coming days before the Trump administration takes office on Monday,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.
The Supreme Court decision on Friday upheld the law, which was passed in April last year, to ban the program in the US unless its parent company in China, ByteDance, sold the platform by Sunday, which it did not do.
TikTok has challenged the law, saying it violates the privacy of its 170 million users in the country.
In the lead up hours on a social media platform that is going offlineProducers were posting videos to say goodbye to their followers.
Creator Nicole Bloomgarden told the BBC that not being on TikTok could reduce earnings.
Another user, Erika Thompson, said that education on the platform is a “big loss” for the community.
TikTok users were met with a message earlier on Saturday that said the order had “forced our services to be temporarily unavailable. We are working to restore our service in the US as soon as possible.”
